My aPPROACH TO aNGER

I believe that anger is often a symptom of something much deeper going on in a person's life. This is especially true for men. In today's culture men are not given permission to express much emotion other than anger. If a man expresses fear or sadness then he is seen as weak. So, he defaults to anger because it is safe and acceptable in the world of men.

Underneath anger are often feelings of fear, anxiety, or shame. In turn those feelings come from negative beliefs that a person has about themselves. So, for example a man grows up with a father who berates him on a daily basis, and calls him worthless. Later in life his wife says something demeaning during an argument and he throws a dish across the room. Certainly her words were harsh, but why the intense reaction? It's because she stepped into a battle he's been waging for years. Is Dad right...am I worthless?

My goal in dealing with anger is to get below the surface to the emotions and faulty core beliefs that fuel a person's rage. I believe that once a person begins the healing process there, they are better equipped to address anger, and communicate what they are feeling.
